Maiz is engaged in specific combinations of practice and reflection, theoretical work and public relations work based on women's migration. The main characteristic of Maiz is their perception, analysis, and practice/activism on both micro and macro levels. One strategy in cultural work is the Showcase Window Gallery (Schaufenstergalerie) at Maiz encompassing eight 2 x 3 metre large showcase windows available for exhibitions. Migrant women from Maiz supervises the programme at the gallery and encourage cooperation between "the Austrian majority" and migrant women and youth through art projects and performative actions.
It’s an organisation by and for migrant women and was created in 1995 out of the necessity for changes with regards to migrants’ living and work situation in Austria and to strengthen political and cultural participation. We explore and adapt theory and practice while developing a variety of new forms, methods and strategies. Our activities include education, legal and social counselling; family counselling; street work and training for migrant women working in the sex trade; cultural work; public relations activities and research. Our activities are aimed to reach migrant women in general as well as refugees, asylum seekers and migrant women working in the sex trade.
E’ un’organizzazione di e per donne migranti. E’ stata creata nel 1995, dalla necessità di cambiare lo sguardo sulla vita e la situazione lavorativa delle migranti in Austria e per rafforzarne la partecipazione culturale e politica. maiz esplora ed applica teoria e pratiche, attraverso lo sviluppo di innovative forme d’azione, metodologie e strategie. Le attività includono consulenze in campo sociale, legale ed educativo; counselling familiare; lavoro di strada e formazione per le donne migranti che lavorano come sex-workers; lavoro culturale, di relazioni pubbliche e di ricerca. Le attività hanno lo scopo di raggiungere le migranti in generale e in particolare le rifugiate, le richiedenti asilo e le sex-workers.
